The Earth or Ground wire is a safety protective wire that normally carries no current.
By carrying away the excess current in a fault c**diti** just before the circuit breaker trips, the Ground wire protects the building and its occupants because the power should be cut off before any**e gets electrocuted or any overloaded circuit wiring or appliances catch ** fire.
The Neutral is the normal "return" wire. In systems where the load is supplied from **ly **e Hot (or "Live") wire, the Neutral completes the circuit and carries current back from the load to the power stati**.
The Neutral and Ground (or "Earth") wires are tied or linked together at the building's incoming power main breaker panel.
In real life, however, you must never assume that a Neutral is safe: it has to be checked with a voltmeter or a voltage indicator to be sure it is not "live".
Since a Neutral carries current under normal circumstances, if the Neutral's feed line back to the power stati** breaks, then any Neutral wires between feed and the break will go live. This is why you should never use a Neutral as a Ground in two wire envir**ments.
